"Woven" is a hand woven and crocheted piece highlighting our individual differences that are
brought together to create a vibrant community. Within this piece there is a white woven base
which I've woven individual 'people' into. On top of the woven base I have attached more
individual 'people' that I crocheted. Each member of the Copley community is unique, I chose to
represent this through my piece by weaving and crocheting different individual 'people.' These
woven people are brought together by a common thread, in this case being proud Copley
residents, and are thus woven together to form a community. The person in the middle is made
up of multiple colors to represent how we all support each other and embrace our differences. I
chose bright colors to represent the vibrancy of our community with a white background to
emphasize the people in our woven tapestry.
As a fiber artist I found the theme of 'community' very intriguing. Community is often described
with phrases like 'common thread' and 'woven together,' which allowed me to take these terms
almost literally when creating my woven piece. Growing up in Copley I loved the friendly
atmosphere I was met with in every school, store and park. During my time at Copley High
School I was met with supportive staff, teachers, and a great network of peers who all
encouraged uniqueness, because that is what builds a diverse and beautiful community. Lifting
each other up is what creates the community Copley displays.
Despite our individuality, we are woven together to create the Copley community.
